In 1853, the well-known French composer Charles Gounod added his<br> <br> own melody over a rippling keyboard accompaniment which was a slightly adapted version of the<br> <br> Prelude No. 1 in C major, BWV846, from Book I of J. S. Bach's The Well-Tempered Clavier,<br> <br> published in 1722. The title of the combined piece was Méditation sur le Premier Prélude de<br> <br> Piano de S. Bach. Gounods original arrangement transposed Bachs keyboard part from C major<br> <br> into F major and it was scored for violin (or cello), organ and piano. In 1859, the French<br> <br> music publishing company Jacques-Léopold Heugel brought out a vocal version based on the<br> <br> familiar Latin text. Orpheus in the Underworld, or Orpheus in Hell are English names for Orphée aux enfers, the comic opera written by Jacques Offenbach. The Overture, also known as the 'Can-can dance' or 'Infernal Galop', was popularized when groups like Moulin Rouge and the Folies Bergère adopted it as their dance set piece.A little fun fact! The overture was not actually writted by Offenbach! It is a giant collage of many themes, in which Jupiter's minuet and John Styx's song recur, and also including J'ai vu le Dieu Bacchus, the couplets Je suis Vénus, the Rondeau des métamorphoses, the Partons, partons section of the Act 2 finale, and the Act 4 galop. The first of its kind, this is a customized La Duchesse-only audition cut of Vous aimez le danger...Ah! que j'aime les militaires from Jacques Offenbach's La Grande-Duchesse de Gérolstein (1867). In the past, singers wishing to audition for this role would have to make a series of awkward cuts to eliminate the gaps created by the choral parts when performing this excerpt. The current edition omits those passages and, as a result, noticeably reduces the page count. In addition, this new engraving is remarkably clearer than the existing vocal score, which has deteriorated from age and is cluttered with instrumental cues that may not be relevant to a sight-reading audition pianist.The piano reduction itself has not been simplified or drastically altered (at the commissioner's request), although the engraving features minor changes from the original edition (for example, eliminating cross-staff chord notation and inserting a few logical enharmonic respellings).About the Arranger: Praised as a sensitive pianist and outstanding accompanist who delivers powerful interpretations, Nicole Elyse DiPaolo enjoys a multifaceted career as a sought-after collaborative pianist, educational composer, arranger, coach, private teacher, and adjunct music professor. Bien allant, mais d'expression tranquilleJacques Leguerney began the composition of his First Sonata for Piano and Violin in 1926, shortly after beginning composition studies with Nadia Boulanger. She was reportedly quite enthusiastic about the natural talent of her new student, and offered to give him private lessons to supplement her analysis classes. Leguerney was already reticent about studying composition. In an interview in 1989, he remembered his feeling at that time, saying that I found that this was useless work. If one is gifted for music, one is capable of writing harmonies. instead, Leguerney showed his Sonata to the French composer Albert Roussel, who was renting an apartment on Avenue Wagram in a building next to that of the Leguerney family. Leguerneyremembered Roussel's apartment with its dark blue walls and gilded Indian statues! Roussel encouraged his efforts and said of the second theme of the first movement: I would have liked to have written that. (J'aurais été très content d'avoir écrit ça.)The first performance of the Sonata was given by the pianist Thérèse Cahen (1897-1944) and the violinist Hortense de Sampigny (? â 1970) in a private concert. The violinist was already a well-known concert artist. De Sampigny finished her studies at the Paris Conservatory in 1915, where she was in the class of Jules Boucherit. In 1918 she married the French author Auguste Bailly (1878-1967). From 1921, she was a member of the Trio Trillat, founded by the pianist Ennemond Trillat with the collaboration of cellist Jean Witkowski. The Trio was active in concerts and recordings in France and abroad for about thirty years. De Sampigny later taught at the Conservatory as assistant to René Benedetti. Thérèse Cahen had studied piano, harmony and counterpoint at the Schola Cantorum, where she obtained a Second Prize. She was a faithful friend and muse for Leguerney, and recruited many musicians for first performances of his vocal and chamber works. She was deported to Auschwitz on July 31, 1944, a few weeks before the Liberation of Paris. This edition of the Sonata was performed at a private concert in Vernon (France) in July 2011 by French violinist Marion Larigaudrie and pianist Mary Dibbern. It is based upon the autograph manuscript OL 23, on deposit at the Music Department of the Bibliothèque national in Paris.
